Paris St Germain have triggered the option to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi on a permanent deal.
The Argentina international was on loan at the Ligue 1 club during the 2019-20 campaign before the French season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in PSG claiming their ninth league title.
Icardi has now signed a four-year contract to remain in the French capital on a permanent basis after scoring 20 goals and registering four assists in 31 appearances for the club.
Now let’s see if Mauro Icardi can be a footballer…
Both teams confirmed the transfer, with Inter saying in a statement: “The club thanks the player for the six seasons he spent with us and wishes him the best for his future professional career.”
At £54m, it is sure to be one of the most expensive signings of a summer transfer window that will be heavily impacted by the ongoing global pandemic.
Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has already suggested that “speculation around transfers of individual players for hundreds of millions of pounds this summer seems to ignore the realities that face the sport.”
Barcelona have also led the way in terms of teasing a summer of player exchanges in lieu of costly transfers.
The Icardi deal contains a reported £13m ‘anti-Juventus clause’, with Inter safeguarding against the prospect of the striker joining their bitter rivals in the future.
Goal claim that Inter ensured they would be ‘reimbursed handsomely’ if Icardi was to be ‘swiftly sold on to their arch-rivals when the transfer market reopens’.
They would receive a £13m payment from PSG in that event.
