Paul Merson says that Mesut Ozil should not be recalled to Arsenal’s starting XI because he does not work hard enough.
Merson, who wasn’t exactly a trooper himself when it came to putting in the hard yards, says that the least Ozil can do is work hard.
Ozil has been absent from Arsenal’s first team with an injury, which has coincided with an upturn in the club’s form. He is thought to be available for the trip to Watford this weekend.
“I wouldn’t put Mesut Ozil back into the side,” Merson told Skysports.com.
“He doesn’t work hard enough for the team. He is a top player but the least you can do is work hard.
“If you have got talent you have had a result – and he has talent – but I have seen players with much less talent than him have a bigger impact on games, which can’t be right.”
Merson had fewer words for Marco Silva’s Watford, who he predicted to be relegated and stated his disbelief that Silva had got the job. Watford are eighth.
