Liverpool forward Sadio Mane was pictured walking off the pitch in tears after Senegal’s win over Equatorial Guinea.
The 26-year-old suffered injury on the last international break when he broke his thumb last month, which required surgery.
Footage emerged on social media of Mane being consoled by his Senegal team-mates with the forward putting his shirt over his head as he struggled to hide his emotions.
The Lions of Teranga have already qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, which starts next year, and they backed it up with a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea.
Mane played the full 90 minutes for his country and Senegalese media outlet Metrodakar moved to ease fears after the match that Mane could have suffered a late injury.
“There is no indication that he is injured,” Metrodakar commented. “The Liverpool player seems sad because of his bad match.”
Mane has faced a lot of criticism in his homeland for some of his recent performances for Senegal with boos greeting a second-half miss from the Liverpool man.
